Summer News

Summer is here! For summer the classroom will consist of new jobs for the children to work on. There will be new jobs set up for practical life, culture, math, language and sensorial. The children will still be hands on with Montessori material. We will be doing a lot of fun artworks that will consist of outer space, volcanoes and farm animals. We will have a blast on the water days and bubble days. Summer is going to be so much fun!

June Recap

In June, as a class we read the book The Little Red Hen, by Paul Galdone. The theme for the month was Transportation. For geography we had the opportunity to dive deep into our state of California. June was a very fun month for the kids. The children were able to work with new classroom jobs. Such as the animal washing job, transferring water from one bowl to another using a dropper, spooning jobs and tongs jobs.

 

They also worked very hard on their math and letter sounds. The children had fun making their Father’s Day gift and had a blast with their dads and grandparents that came for our special Father’s Day celebration. For the month of June, the children learned more facts about California. We went over California’s flowers, birds, flag, and state capitol.

May Recap

Our theme for May was Dinosaurs. For geography, we studied the continent of Africa. The book of the month was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children had so much fun with this month’s theme. We had the chance to discuss different types of dinosaurs. The children shared fun facts they knew about their favorite dinosaur. We discussed what animals and/or plants dinosaurs would eat and where they lived before becoming extinct. We played a guessing game with our globe. The children would try and guess which continent I would point to. They realized that we had talked about most of the continents but Africa. The children had the opportunity to learn more about Africa, for example, where it’s located on the map and globe and about its food and traditional clothing. We also celebrated with all our moms at PCMA. We loved seeing our moms interact with other moms and spend time with the children. The children were so excited to celebrate with their moms and give them the special gift they made for them. In addition, I would like to thank all the parents and students for all the hugs, treats, and love we received for Teachers Appreciation Week. We truly appreciate all of you! 

April Recap

Our theme for April was Our Planet Earth. The book of the month was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. One of the lessons for the month was the layers of the earth. This lesson caught the kids’ attention. They had fun learning about the crust, mantle, inner core, outer core, and core. The children had an engaging discussion on how to take care of our planet earth. They mentioned we can protect the earth by using our bikes instead of our cars, shutting off the faucets when we are not using them, turning off the lights when not in use, and by planting more trees. We discussed the importance of recycling and throwing our trash inside a trash can and not on the ground. The children also learned about the parts of a volcano, and they were able to participate in the volcano eruption science activity. In this activity, the children used baking soda, vinegar, dish soap and red food coloring. They had a lot of fun working on their koala art project and volcano art project. The kids sure love working with paint!

March Recap

In March, the children had the chance to read Dr. Seuss books. For geography, we studied the continent of South America. Our theme for the month was the rainforest. March was full of fun activities and amazing weather. The children had the opportunity to discuss our upcoming change of season from winter to spring. They are beyond excited to leave the cold and cloudy days for sunny and warm days. This month we had so much fun learning about the different types of rainforests and the animals they habitat. The children were also able to put together a picture collage of their favorite rainforest animal. This month we also looked into parts of the chick/chicken. The children also were taught South Americas’ traditional clothing and food. 

February Recap

In February, the children had the chance to read Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni. For geography, we studied the continent of Asia. Our theme for the month was Cultural and Friendship. February came with a lot of rainy days which the children loved. The children had fun learning about the flag of China, India, and Japan. They were shocked to learn the year when the flags were first adopted by the country. Learning about Taj Mahal was also an interesting lesson for the children, they learned the history of the structure and interesting facts such as how the building changes color at certain times of the day.



This month the children had a blast sharing their item from their family culture, they had the chance to ask their friends questions about their item and learn a little more about their friends’ culture. The children learn about kind gestures they can have with their friends from using polite words to helping a friend out when needed or inviting a friend to play. February was a fun month for the children. Our Valentine’s party was a total success, the children enjoyed their delicious snacks and had a blast passing out their valentine goody-bags.

January Recap

In January, the children had the chance to read The Mitten by Jan Brett. For geography, we studied the continent of Antarctica. Our theme for the month was Winter animals and hibernation. January was a very cold month; we had a couple rainy days which the children absolutely loved. We had so much fun learning about animals that hibernate in the winter, the children had a great time playing a guessing-game where they had to guess where each animal hibernates. In January, we also celebrated the day of Martin Luther King Jr. The children were amazed with his story and had fun sharing their own personal dreams with their classmates. Learning about the different types of penguins was interesting for the kids. During the lesson, the children thought that some of the penguins looked kind of silly. For art, the children made a snowflake, since we learned about hibernating animals the children had the chance to do an art project of a frog. 


December Recap

December was such a fun month for the children. The theme for the month of December was Seasons and Holidays. Book of the month was, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and the continent of study was Europe. The children had a great time learning about the continent of Europe, they had the opportunity to work with Three-part cards to match historical European buildings and the building names. The children did this activity either alone or worked with partners. There were a lot of new practical life jobs introduced to the children such as hanging ornaments on our classroom Christmas tree. They really enjoyed this job and the children mentioned how it reminded them of how they decorate their Christmas tree at home with their parents.


This month was filled with a lot of fun activities for the children. PCMA received a special visit from Santa Clause. The children had so much fun asking him questions and loved that Santa read them a book. The children enjoyed practicing their Christmas songs for their Christmas recital and they did an amazing job performing for their family members. 


November Recap

Hello Parents! November was a fun month for all the children. The month's theme was Harvest and Healthy Bodies, and the book of the month was To Fill a Bucket by Carol McCloud and Katherine Martin. Throughout November, the children were introduced to Living and Nonliving things. They were taught about the parts of the turkey. Circle times were filled with discussions, including one about Veterans Day and its significance.

 

We read our book of the month and discussed how everyone had a bucket and what it took to fill each other's buckets. The children had the chance to color and decorate their buckets. During one circle time, the children shared what they were most thankful for. Throughout the month, they learned about maintaining a healthy body—understanding healthy foods and drinks and the importance of exercise, stretching, and breathing. The children thoroughly enjoyed the new Montessori work, from buttoning jobs to new pouring and spooning activities.

October Recap

The theme for the month of October was 'The Five Senses and Feelings', and the book of the month was 'Going on a Leaf Hunt' by Steve Metzger. During the geography lessons, the children learned about North America and were able to identify it on a globe and a map. They also learned about the different North American flags, including those of the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The children continued to work with practical life, sensorial, cultural, math, language, and manipulatives on a daily basis. The month of October was a lot of fun for the children, especially with all the Halloween activities, including the Halloween Costume Parade and Trick-or-Treating for goodies. Our little ones learned about the parts of the pumpkin and its life cycle. They were also given lessons on hot vs. cold items and lessons on solid, liquid, and gas for science. The primary room started doing Enrichments with Ms. Jasmine from Primary Room 6, and the children have been loving all the enrichment activities, including trail mixes, cutting, gluing, pasting, and working on our school's new Chromebooks and using ABC Mouse on Fridays.

September 2023

For September, our theme was, 'All About Me'! We loved getting to know each other and our new classroom. We learned how to care for our classroom and ourselves and respect each other, our teachers, and our environment. The children also enjoyed learning more about each other's families and our family tree. Our book of the month was The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. For Geography, we learned about the Seven Continents. We discussed the difference between a map and a globe. We learned maps are flat while our globe is a sphere. The children had the chance to learn about non-living and living things, plants and animals, and work with magnetic vs. non-magnetic objects. The children also had the opportunity to explore their classroom and become more comfortable. The children had the chance to work on Practical Life jobs, with water work being their absolute favorite. They enjoy doing jobs that help them become more independent, like pouring and spooning. 

Summer 2023

It’s hard to believe that our summer camp has ended. I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing summer. We all had so much fun learning and experiencing many new lessons this Summer. Summer camp brought so many wonderful educational and unique learning experiences.  Our weekly classes included learning all about farm animals, the solar system, volcanoes, Ocean Animals, and things that fly. Some of our amazing in-house field trips had a Bubble show, a Mad Scientists show, a visit from the librarian, and our Reptile friends.  The children all got to make many fun art projects this Summer,  have picnic lunches on our playground, and enjoy sliding down our amazing waterslide. We closed out the Summer with our First Annual Summer Carnival, where the children had fun playing games and making fun arts and crafts. It was so great to see all of the parents and children enjoy themselves. Thank you to all our parents who participated and helped make our Carnival a success.
