Summer News

We are ready to start our summer program! Students will be exploring various themes. Students will learn all about volcanoes. As a group students will create a volcano in which they will erupt outdoors. They will use water, baking soda, food coloring, dish soap and vinegar. In the end students will be asked questions about the chemical reaction they have observed. We are so excited for all the events and fun days to come throughout the summer!

June Recap

This month we enjoyed celebrating the father figures of the class. We spent one on one time asking each child unique questions about their parents. Children also participated in showing their artistic side by decorating a mug for their dad. During the celebrations with dads’ children had the opportunity to make a parachute. Once they made it, they got to release it from the highest point of the play structure. This brought lots of laughter and memorable moments to the classroom.

Another focus for June was learning about California. Of course, we couldn’t do that without admiring the beautiful beaches that surround the state. After they learned about the main geographic facts, they had the opportunity to create a science experiment. The activity consisted of making a wave in a bottle. Children began by placing water in their plastic clear bottle. They then added blue food coloring to represent ocean water. The last liquid ingredient was adding baby oil to create a density variant between the two. Finally, students added various sea creatures and other objects they find in the ocean.

As the year came to an end, we celebrated our graduating students. Every morning for the past month the children practiced two songs to perform for their parents. It was a delight to see how enthusiastic our students were learning new songs. We wish our graduating class the best of luck in their next endeavors.

May Recap

In May students spent weeks growing a plant for moms. Children first painted the pot with colors that reminded them of her. They then placed the potting soil and picked from three different seeds (lavender, thyme, rosemary) to plant. Every day they watered the plant to ensure they grew. Students also learned why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We then took an in-house field trip to our avocado tree and made guacamole with them. Each student had a mixing bowl that contained onions, tomatoes, garlic, cilantro and avocados. They smashed the avocados and mixed the ingredients. Once it was ready they indulged in their treat.

Real life caterpillars joined our classroom! The caterpillars had a station in every section of the classroom. In the Language area they observed the caterpillar and practiced spelling the word. For the Math section they regularly measured the caterpillar to keep track of its growth. In Sensorial they were asked questions about anything they noticed differently over time. This included observation using their five senses. In Art they could draw and/or cut out a butterfly. They also created a butterfly with water-based paint, coffee filters and pipe cleaners. Finally, in Practical Life they ensured the caterpillar was always clean and regularly eating. Six of our seven caterpillars made it to the cocoon stage. Having lost one caterpillar, as a group, students explained their reasoning on how they knew it had died. Some of these observations included the caterpillar not moving, eating or growing in comparison to the rest. Students are now eagerly waiting to have butterflies soon!

April Recap

Hello Parents of Primary 6! My name is Ms. Monica and I have spent the last couple of days getting to know your wonderful children. It has been a privilege getting to bond with each one of them. We have been working together to create a fun and nurturing environment. For morning circle, we start by acknowledging what our day will look like moving forward. During this time, we also discuss the theme of the month. During work period I love to play classical music that will incorporate the composer of the month. At this time, I will work one on one with each student. Alongside Ms. Kelly, we have been closing out the April curriculum and are ready to kick start the month of May.

March Recap

I’m happy to say the classroom has had a great month of March! Spring has finally arrived, and the time change has allowed us to have longer sun time as well! This month we have studied South America, spring vs. winter, and celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with wearing green and bringing a green share.

For March Geography we have discussed South America. Focusing on the children being able to find South America on the map and globe. We were able to discuss the parts of South America, like the rain forest, traditions, and landmarks. The children enjoyed coloring the continents and finding the location on the map they colored.

March also marks the beginning of spring! We discussed the difference of temperature from winter, the clothing differences for the weather change. We did leprechauns for art and Easter around the world. We also discussed the weather that the rainforest, the rainforest’s different layers, and the animals found in the rainforest.

January Recap

I hope you all have had a great start to the New Year! January flew by and we have all been busy working and learning all about Winter. In January we discussed Winter, Snow and Ice! We talked about the season of Winter, how it gets colder and what types of clothing we need to wear in the winter. We also discussed the difference between water, ice and snow. The children got the opportunity to learn the difference between water and ice.

For geography, we focused on the continent of Antarctica. We talked about what the weather is like in Antarctica. The children learned about all of the different animals that live in Antarctica. They also made a special penguin art project and decorated snowflakes for our bulletin board.

We also discussed hibernation, we learned about the different types of animals that hibernate in the winter. We discussed the different places animals will go to hibernate, for example bears and bats hibernate in caves, whereas squirrels and hedgehogs will build a nest to hibernate in. The children colored and made their very own hibernation workbook.

December Recap

WOW! December is already over!! We started our month off by having a visit from Santa. The children enjoyed reading a book, telling Santa what they wanted, and taking pictures with Santa. In December our theme was Seasons and Holidays. We incorporated that in our classroom by talking about the different holidays our friends celebrate. For Hanukah, we learned about the menorah. The children enjoyed adding a candle each day during our morning circle time. Our discussions were about how the weather is like during winter and what season it brings. Our friends knew and named things such as how it can snow in some places and how it is beginning to become very cold. Some friends even mentioned how they have been to places that have snow. As part of enrichment, we experimented as a class and made our own snow!! It sure was messy but seeing all my friends’ happy faces brought joy to my heart.

For our practical life, we practiced learning our new work. They have helped reinforce our fine motor skills and hand and eye coordination. Our favorite new work of this month has been chain links and stringing beads. With these two new jobs the children have been able to work more with their fine motor skills. They have been doing so well with connecting the links by color to color, and from short too long. We ended our month of December with so much fun. We first had our Winter performance which came out Great. Thank you, parents, for always supporting and showing up. It means a lot. Then Spirit Week! Seeing my friends come in with such cute Christmas hats, pjs and seeing how much they enjoyed decorating gingerbread houses and their book exchange. What a great way to end our year!

November Recap

Throughout November, we delved into discussions about Healthy and Unhealthy foods. The children engaged in a sporting activity, distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy food options. We emphasized the importance of exercise and its role in maintaining focus and overall health. In geography, I introduced the map of the United States of America. Explaining that we live in California, which is part of the USA, I highlighted the beauty of our state—our access to beaches and mountains and the ability to journey up north to witness the Golden Gate Bridge. Some children shared their experiences visiting San Francisco and driving across the iconic bridge.

The Parent-Teacher conferences were a great opportunity to connect. I appreciate each of you taking the time to meet with me. Teaching your children brings me immense joy every single day.

October Recap

We had a fun and busy October. We discussed Our 5 Senses, the sense of taste, sight, smell, hearing, and touch. The students got the opportunity to work with a sound tray that was placed on our sensorial shelf. There was a maraca, a music box, and sound cylinders all on one tray for them to work on this month. They also got the opportunity to use their sense of smell by smelling different scents that were placed in smelling jars. They also used their sense of touch by helping take the seeds out of a pumpkin. The children made several fun Halloween art projects, including a silly Jack-o-lantern, a bat silhouette, and a handprint ghost art project, and painted their very own pumpkins.

For Geography last month, we discussed the continent of North America. The children had fun working with the map of North America and learning about all of the different types of animals that live in North America. The children were able to name and recognize some of the animals that are located in North America, especially the black bear, raccoon, coyote, turkeys, and the monarch butterfly. We also discussed the differences between a plant and an animal. The children worked on our Life Cycle of pumpkin cards that are in our cultural area of the class. We all had a blast celebrating Halloween this year. The children had so much fun parading around the playground and receiving fun toys and snacks. Thank you all for donating snacks and goodies for Halloween. You helped make this year's parade a success!

September 2023

Fall is upon us, and we feel the days get shorter and the nights get longer. It’s hard to believe that September is gone. All the children have done such an amazing job in our class. They have all been working so hard as they become normalized in their daily routines. The real work begins when the children have become settled and stay busy with their work.

In September, we discussed All About Me. The children made their own All About Me booklet and drew self-portraits. The children also got the opportunity to introduce themselves and tell us their favorite colors, animals, and toys during our morning circle lessons. We also discussed the different parts of an Apple and how apples grow. The children also made an Apple art project. I also introduced our Grace and Courtesy lessons, which included putting their work away, rolling a rug, how to push their chair in, and saying please and thank you. I aim to teach all the children to become more independent and confident in their daily lessons and routines. For geography, we learned about the 7 Continents and the globe. We discussed how we live on Earth in the Continent of North America and near the Pacific Ocean. The students also learned the 7 Continents song and got to work with the Continent map in the classroom.

I have had so much fun getting to know our new friends this month and working with everyone. I want to introduce Ms. Jasmine to our class. She will be my assistant this year, and I’m so excited to have her with us. She has worked in Early Childhood Education for several years and has experience working in a Montessori environment. She is so sweet and a wonderful asset in our class.

Summer 2023
